GOW Spectator | Available for Download | (PS3 & PC)

Click here to read about or download the ONLY PS3 Spectator Mod currently available.

GOW Spectator allows you to observe the action in a multiplayer UT3 match on PS3. You can already spectate matches in the PC version but Epic left spectating out of the PS3 version. GOW Spectator opens a back door for you to use this dormant feature.

Spectating is a great way to learn the tricks of the masters. When you're a spectator, you can follow over the shoulder of each player in the match. Use the next-weapon button to cycle through different players. You can also fly around the map independently. Press the secondary fire button to break free and fly around using the normal motion controls. Press the primary fire button to view team objectives... typically the orb or flag carrier.

To spectate a match, you must login to a server hosting GOW Spectate and you must enter the password using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. To enter the match as a normal active player, just enter the password using lowercase letters.

Why ALLCAPS vs. lowercase passwords? The mutator needs to know whether you want to be a spectator as soon as you join the server. The main challenge I had to overcome was having no "spectate" button for you to press before you join a match. The only user input that is available after you select a server to join but before you login is the password entry field. I had to exploit that. UT3 disregards capitalization when it checks the password and the mutator also has access to the password (relax... not your user password... just the game password). So, by looking at password capitalization, I can tell the difference between players and spectators.

To host a server that allows spectators, add GOW Spectator to your list of mutators. Then specify something for game password. Capitalization does not matter when you're setting up the password so you might as well stick with lowercase. If you want your game to be open, tell people the password in the server description field. I suggest something like this:

"Xyz: Pass=nootsucks"

This allows people browsing the server list to see the password. Of course now the problem is your server will be filtered out of non-locked server lists.

I really hope Epic will add the UI for spectating in the future. Maybe there's something I'm overlooking but I think they're just one button, one checkbox, and one slider away... the rest of the code is already there.

Pacer deserves a raise

Way to go man.  This is a very useful mod you have created.  Very exciting to see this working even in the password limited game mode.

spectator limit

I set the limit to 4 spectators. I figured 12 players + 4 spectators = 16 max. Let me know if you can get 16 players + 4 spectators.

Spectator mode demands more resources

Spectator mode demands more resources (at least I know this is true for PC) because of all the things you can do (switching viewpoints, flying "camera", etc.) More spectators = More lagginess = less fun for players. There have been some great threads about the PC spectator mode at Epic, but they probably left it off of PS3 intentionally to get a higher max player count. As you guys know, even 8v8 can crash/lag w/no spectators. Also...... Dude, you're AWESOME for doing this!

GOW_Einstein strikes again!!!

Pacer you have truly out done yourself this time. Could this mean we could esentially record matches through the spectator mode. I'm sure there would be involved but it could be done right?

PACER IS THE MAN!

watching U and Noot play last night was awesome! even though i didn't know i could fly around too! lol. This is really going to help us practice!

*NOTE*spectators can only talk to other spectators during the match.... but everyone can hear each other between rounds.

that chat box idea sounds great! i really hope that works!!!

Yea, it was KillinUGood's video that inspired me to look into spectator mode. I've got some big ideas when it comes to creating clan match videos... blu-ray anyone?

Yeah, we all have blu-ray players

Yeah, we all have blu-ray players, and the burners are way down to around 150, pretty cheap compared to a few months ago. Could you make sound, so when someone gets a great kill, and the spectators are all oohing and aaaaing, the player could hear it in the playback? Of course, that means spectators would have to be careful what they say.....mmmmm maybe thats not so good, I have to think about that..... .

I love it...Plus Feedback

Pacer, I fucking love spectating.

A couple of things I noticed when spectating today...

During the second round, I could hear and talk to one team.

When I was on through a map vote, I would "spawn" in a locked location.  I couldn't fly around freely or follow players.  Just a stationary camera view.  This happened on both Avalanche and Downtown - Avalanche on the rim around the Prime Node and Downtown at the Core behind a weapons locker.

This is my favorite "mutator" so far and I look forward to watching how you all kick my ass without actually having my ass kicked.

spectator bugs

These bugs, along with resource constraints, may explain why Epic pulled spectating out of PS3 team games. I don't want to chase down fixes because it is much harder (if not impossible) for me to fix them as a mod writer.

Maybe they've already fixed it but I don't even know if there's another PS3 patch coming. So for now, it is what it is.

Spectator mode video

My first look at GOWSpectator last night in the Necropolis battle.  It took a moment to figure out the controls, but it works quite nicely.  Yes it does freeze at the start of the next map if you spectate through the vote screen.  But it also did that on PC to me before.

Here is the link to the vid -

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6572933220073967085&hl=en

A little better quality than my first one - since I was able to align the cam with the center of my tv a little better.  Does anyone know of a video hosting site that doesn't compress the crap out of your vids?  The text is readable on the original video, but once uploaded it gets pixely and grainy

another cool video. thanks for the props!

Maybe Vimeo will host higher quality videos. Also, we could host high quality PS3-compatible AVC video downloads on this site. You can create PS3 compatible AVC videos using (shameless plug) Sony Vegas Pro.

You are right about that sir.  Just uploaded this vid to Vimeo and will be using it for future videos of mine.  Drag it won't let me edit my first post or else I'd change the link to this vid.  Maybe a moderator could???
